Michael Turvey

Michael Turvey is an independent singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose work bridges the energy of classic rock, the soul of British mod, and a constantly evolving creative vision. Formerly the driving force behind Portsmouth band The Chase (2010–2016), Turvey has since carved out a solo career defined by total artistic control—writing, producing, mixing and mastering every track, and performing nearly all the instrumentation himself.

Turvey’s self-titled debut album “Michael Turvey” (2017) marked the beginning of that journey. Rooted in the mod-rock sensibilities of his former band but expanded with broader influences—from Jack White and Paul Weller to the Black Keys, Johnny Marr and AC/DC—the album introduced his blend of gritty riffs and melodic immediacy. Singles like “Hypnotised”, with its swirling guitar hook and stomping chorus, and “In a Moment” an acoustic-driven, uplifting anthem, quickly became fan favourites. The album launched with a hometown show at Portsmouth’s legendary Wedgewood Rooms. Long time friend and collaborator Ralph Humby performed all drum parts on the album and played at the launch gig.

His second record, “Blue Sky Beyond” (2021), pushed his sound into heavier and more adventurous territory. The explosive single “The Flame” delivered the heaviest riff in his catalogue—channelling White Stripes urgency and Sabbath-esque weight—while “Getaway” combined a tight, driving verse with a punchy, Jam-style chorus. The album also reunited all members of The Chase on “Somewhere in the Stars”. Recorded remotely during the Covid lockdown, Turvey pieced together each musician’s performance into a soaring, emotional tribute to their shared history. Former bandmates Ralph Humby (drums) and Luke Jerome (bass) also appear on standout tracks “The Line” and “Getaway”, respectively. The title track, “Blue Sky Beyond”, pays homage to Turvey’s enduring Paul Weller influence.

In 2024 Turvey entered a prolific creative period that produced his third album, “Secrets from the Back of Beyond”—the first project on which he played every instrument. Spanning 14 tracks, the album ranges from the Lennon-inspired swell of “Trees”, to the brass-driven mod stomp of “Still Flows Time”. “Circles” channels atmospheric BRMC textures, lifting into one of his most soaring choruses, while “By Your Side” showcases his acoustic sensitivity with a Neil Young–inspired, finger-picked warmth. The optimistic “Another Road” rounds out the album with bright brass and an infectious bounce.

Never one to stand still, Turvey is currently developing three new albums simultaneously: an acoustic-led collection, a stripped-back rock record, and a third designed for long-time fans of his signature sound. He is releasing tracks individually as they’re completed, with the full trilogy set for release in 2026.

Relentlessly creative and entirely self-driven, Michael Turvey continues to expand his musical world while honouring the roots that shaped it—proving with each release that independence can be both powerful and endlessly inventive.
